Daniel Coquilla Background (from UP NISMED website)

Daniel Coquilla, aka Cox at NISMED and Dansoy in the art world, is a Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Thirteen Artists Awardee 2006. A triennial event, the award recognizes the potentials of progressive artists who “draw public attention to the need for art and its critical sensibilities in our national quest for social transformation.”

Known for his “from the top” view of scenes from everyday life, Cox represents faces looking at the viewer as one looks at, and into, the painting’s details. His works, as well as his titles, are whimsical and at times satirical, reflecting Cox’s very nature.

Multi-awarded at age 36, Cox is the video editor at the Audiovisual Group. His other major awards include: Award of Excellence-24th Shell National Student Art Competition 1991; Grand Prize-AAP Annual Painting Competition 1996; Juror’s Choice-Philip Morris 4th ASEAN Art Awards 1997; UP Gawad Chanselor para sa Sining Biswal 1998; Philippine Winner-Winsor and Newton Worldwide Millennium Painting Competition 1999.

Weird Vespa Ride

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I’m sure this has happened to you.

Looking out of the window, I decided that yes, I was going to wear that hot waterproof jacket since it looks like a drizzle will fall as I ride to the office. No need for the lower half since it’ll only be a drizzle. The main reason I wore the heavy hot jacket was so I could be ready for a wet ride home in the evening.

My impromptu forecast worked……..for all of 5 minutes. As I hit C-5 before Kalayaan Ave., the heavens suddenly opened up and brought forth a torrent so strong visibility was reduced to a few feet. At least my shirt was dry….but everything below the waist was soaking wet. No way I could go to the office looking like that so off I went wet and defeated on the way home.

As I got home, I got ready for the rain, short pants, Crocs and extra shirts and rubber shoes. Lo and behold, the sun was out. This was literally minutes after I got out of the pouring rain and changed into my dry clothes.

Oh well, these things do happen and are still going to happen in the future. That’s what makes riding, specially the Vespa, such a joy.

Motorcycle Exclusions

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Let me repost an article written by Inquirer writer and fellow rider Randy David. It has an interesting point of view on all the discussions regarding the total Motorcycle ban on the freeways. It presents no side, has no biases instead presents the situation as it really is.

I remember the first time I drove a motorcycle on the expressway. It was 1967, and the new North Diversion Road (as it was then called) was almost finished, although it had not yet officially opened. I realized then that some motorcycles are made for open highways, while others do better on city roads. The concept of “limited access highways” was new in our country.
