SEA Games Badminton
Our view of the SEA Games Badminton competition

My wife, kids and I had the great fortune of being able to attend last night’s SEA Games Badminton Team finals at the Philsports Arena in Pasig. Though Team Philippines failed to make it into the finals we were still excited because the 2 badminton powerhouse teams Indonesia and Malaysia would be facing each other in the men’s division while Singapore and Thailand would meet in the women’s division.

I won’t be going into scores because there was too much happening at once for me to remember what the scores were. The highlight of my night came really early when Chong Wei Lee of Malaysia (world #3) faced the ever popular and reigning World Champion Taufik Hidayat (world #8). It was pretty one sided, at least from my point of view. Taufik looked really really graceful and Lee looked rather out of sync. Taufik took the first singles match rather easily in straight sets giving Indonesia a 1-0 lead in the best of 5 Team event.

Malaysia came back though in the 2nd singles, after going down 2-0, losing the 1st doubles to Indonesia. World ranked Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia fell miserably to a rather tall Malaysian player whose name I didn’t catch. That guy’s good, I hope I catch his name soon.

Those were the only truly memorable stuff I saw that night, the Women’s competition was rather exciting too, though a bit slower in pace. Singapore had a knack for rallying back from big deficits.

Unfortunately we didn’t finish the competition since Marco had a bout of sumpungitis. So I don’t know who won hehe. Sayang. Basta when we left Indonesia and Malaysia were tied 2-2 and Thailand was on it’s way to tying it’s match with Singapore 2-2.
