Strange Powerbook Dilemna

I was supposed to change machines today. My trusted 1ghz 17″ Powerbook was showing signs of age, slowing down and having intermittent breaks in the most inopportune times. I needed a newer machine to handle the workload we were expecting.

Fortunately a 12″ 1.33ghz Powerbook became available and I readily snapped it up. The problem came up when I was trying to upgrade my software from 10.2 to 10.3. I couldn’t even get it to boot up from the CD. I have tried all our disks, our original upgrades down to a bootleg stand-alone, it just won’t boot up.

The Tiger updater will boot up but obviously won’t install as a standalone or an upgrade from Jaguar.

So, we’re stuck. I wonder what’s wrong?

Have you checked if the 12 powerbook hardwware is working correctly with disk utility? Do you have sufficient HD space available for the upgrade?

Can you afford to lose all data on the 12 PB and reformat the HD from the powerbook (with Disk utility) and then ire-nstall the OS from the original disk? If the 17″ and 12″ have the same OS generation (10.2/10.3 or 10,4) then you coul also use fw disk target mode to copy all apps and user files from the 17″ to 12″.

You may also try searching for similar issues in the apple.com discussion groups or post a question there.

I’ve removed the 512MB ram to bring it down to the original 256MB Ram, still no go. I formatted the HD with Disk Utility, erased to zero, and still no go. If nothing else works I’ll try the fw alternative tomorrow if i get the free time to do it.

    Thanks for the tip!!
