Bajaj Chetak: Forgot about this

Bajaj Chetak

In my excitement about Piaggio’s re-entry into the Indian market, I totally forgot about a 4-Stroke geared scooter that’s been around for quite a time already.

The Bajaj Chetak was developed by former Piaggio partner Bajaj (told you going solo was a good idea), the Chetak was Bajaj’s foray into the Vespa-look scooter scene in the USA where emission standards made it difficult for the 2 strokers to penetrate the market.

According to the Bajaj site….

At 110 Miles per Gallon (per independent EPA City Cycle dyno tests) Bajaj scooters have the highest mileage rating of any 150cc scooter in the U.S. Very Low Exhaust Emissions meet the strict California emissions standards. An all steel Monocoque Body, provides a rugged chassis with classic motor scooter styling. A powerful, high torque, smooth running 4-stroke engine and 4-SPEED, all steel gears transmission, provides for superior reliability and very low fuel consumption. Built by Bajaj Auto Ltd., a modern manufacturer with over 40 years of experience building reliable scooters and utility vehicles.

Bajaj, unfortunately has stopped production of these scoots. They have shifted their operations to Motorcycle building (bummer), I think a partnership with Kawasaki was the giveaway there (you can see a Bajaj/Kawasaki bike here in Manila sometimes…called the Wind 125). But they have promised to continue production of the parts for these soon to be really classic scoots.

Now I really do hope Piaggio India does produce a 4-Stroke geared scoot.
