Piaggio Set for Indian Comeback

Piaggio, mother company of the venerable Vespa line of scooters, shall have another crack at the Indian market. Will the 3rd time be a charm for the Italian scooter giant.

Rumors of LML’s revival have been circulating for quite some time, though no fixed plans have been heard of or announced. This latest news probably paves the way for the continued production of the Vespa PX range for the international market.

Another interesting thing regarding this is that Piaggio will be going at it on their own. It will be operated by Piaggio’s fully owned subsidiary Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd. The experience from having to operate with partners in the past, causing the closures of both ventures, probably have a lot to do with it.

And one more thing….

This time, however, both the Vespa and Aprilia brands will be introduced by the Milan-based group’s wholly owned subsidiary Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd from a new two-wheeler plant. Vespa is likely to be launched in the 125-250cc range. Aprilia, however, may be introduced in smaller displacements. In Italy and Europe, Aprilia sells in the 50-650cc range. Piaggio acquired Aprilia in 2004.

While the new Vespa scooters will be redesigned for India and fitted with four-stroke engines, the smaller engine capacity Aprilia will have more fuel-efficient engines.

Interesting…..is the 4 Stroke PX finally going to arrive? Or will Piaggio continue with the Auto Vespas there. That’s one thing I will be taking a very very close look at.

News can be read here.

And as usual, thanks to 2strokebuzz.com for the heads up.
