Vespa is back in India

After a long absence, Vespa is officially coming back to India.

Piaggio has launched its scooter brand Vespa at the Auto Expo 2012 in India on January 6, 2012. The Chairman and Managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Ravi Chopra unveiled the first Vespa scooter to be launched in India in April 2012 – Vespa LX 125 which will go on sales in India in April 2012. Vespa scooters are stylish and well designed Italian engineering machines known for their style and lifestyle appeal globally. Vespa has been present in India in the past as well in joint ventures with partners like Bajaj and LML, but this time, it will be launching its products independently in the emerging Indian two wheeler market.

Looks like your regular LX to me, nut closer inspection reveals front and rear drum brakes though the tech specs list a single disc brake for the front. That don’t look like disk brakes to me. Anyway I understand the cost cutting is necessary to drive the price down for the Indian market, since the current price points of Vespa scoots worldwide has gone from expensive to ridiculous. Maybe that’ll be a start for scoots here. But hey, I’d rather pay more for quality scoots than buy me a product of bean counter calculations.

More pictures and information on the LX 125 is available here.
